Humble beginnings and big dreams

Writing dreams

It started out as a simple gathering to meet other writers, talk about craft, and share creative ideas. It’s hard to believe it has grown into something so much more.

Welcome to the Shiawassee Area Writers website. We are a typical group of writers. We seek to master writing skills at our bi-monthly meetings by sharing, learning, and interacting with those seeking to do the same.

Our writing paths are diverse. Some members just want to create stories and share them with family and friends. Our advanced writers are seeking help with their craft, networking, and marketing. Each writer merging on individualized paths, yet each with an ambition for success.

Now established as the county’s foremost writing group, we are thirty members strong. Ten members have at least one published novel/book and five writers have more. Some are traditionally published, and others have chosen a self-publishing route.

Last Christmas, we decided to publish our first anthology. Six volunteer editors took member writings and fully immersed themselves in evaluating each one. After revisions, meeting deadlines, and also having someone critique their work…eighteen writers gave us the best of their writing and in September of 2018, we published our first anthology entitled, ‘Winter in the Mitten.’ It is now for sale and selling well.

Our future goals are to offer writers an opportunity to attend a writer’s conference of their choice – free of charge. We’d also like to begin offering scholarships to area high school seniors seeking a writing or journalism career.

If you find yourself dreaming of becoming an author or just enjoy the craft of writing, join us for a meeting. We’d love to share with you the adventures and thrills of being a writer because ~ Everyone has a story to tell!
